It depends on whether or not they put in a stent with a long or short string. If the string is hanging out, it can be used to pull the stent out. If the string is in the bladder, it requires a cystoscopy to retrieve it.
    Ask your urologist about it.

a stent is to prevent contracture of the ureter due to scarring. Ordinarily it is removed via cystoscopy. They put you in your happy place for the procedure. Maybe not deep anesthesia, but enough to prevent any discomfort.
Needles nowadays are not like the old ones. They have a flexible plastic “needle” that stays in the vein. The needle part is removed.
Honest Abe, a Nephrologist is not the man to talk to about this. The Urologist is the one to answer questions.
It is just a pinprick. Nothing to be afraid of. If you have had the pain of passing a stone, a needle stick is nothing.

I am no doctor. You probably should get a second opinion from a board certified nephrologist.
I have read of stents used for artery occulsion, but not for kidney stones, make certain that this is not some research study. There is a great deal of pressure on doctors to put people that go to a university hospital into research studies.
Below is a link to the Merck Manual, poke around in this text and also a medical physiology text to aquaint yourself with the issues.
Ask the doctor who suggested this treatment if he/she knows where the topic is discussed in the Merck Manual. If its not in there then it might be too new a topic to try out.http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec17/ch230/ch…
You also should try to find out why the kidney stones formed in the first place.

Stenting is very common after stone extraction. Stent removal is usually done a week or two later.
From personal experience, take TWO of your pain pills about an hour before your appointment to have the stent removed. Have someone drive you two & from the office.
What’s uncomfortable is passage of the scope past the prostrate gland. Not fun, but the discomfort doesn’t last long.
    Good luck.
