Symptoms:
Flank pain
Difficulty urinating
Pain while urinating
Urge to urinate (feels like you need to, but nothing comes out)
Nausia and/or vomiting
Fever
Urinary tract infection
Blood in the urine
SEVERE pain
You are NOT “passing” a stone just because you have one. The process of “passing” actually starts when the stone is coming through the ureter and then to the bladder. It typically doesn’t hurt once it’s in the bladder, all the pain comes from the passing through the ureter!
It can take WEEKS sometimes to pass a stone from the time it enters the ureter to the time it drops into the bladder (then you urinate it out). You need to call a UROLOGIST if you are passing one, take pain meds (vicodin or dilauded), and drink LOTS of water!!!!!! Also take phenergan (nausia med) and flowmax (helps open up the ureter)
I have noticed that I pass a stone MUCH faster after I go to the emergency room and that’s because they hook you up to a saline drip and it’s PUSHING PUSHING PUSHING the fluid through you.
Sometimes the pain and nausia CAN’T be controlled at home and forces you to go to the ER. They do not “hospitalize” you, you are in and out of the ER within a few hours.
TREATMENT:
Most kidney stones are “passable” – which means the doctors decide that you are able to urinate the stone out. IF the stone is causing obstruction, infection, or kidney function failure, they will go in and laser it or do lithotripsy, which is a centralized shock wave that breaks up the stone into small piece, making it almost pain free to pass.
